If we had idols is this age, what would they look like?
In ages past many idols were made of wood, metal, stone and gems.
Today some still are made of materials from the earth.
Yet many of today’s idols are intangible.
Coronavirus is impacting many aspects of our lives including health, medical service availability, financial, social and mental health. Look what is being challenged in these days:
- Health
- Happiness
- Physical Intimacy
- Freedom
- Intelligence
- Information
- Status symbols like cool cars, planes, big houses, and travel
- The thrill of being surrounded and adored by fans
- Sense of self-control
- Sense of security
- retirement funds and dreams
- opportunities to work and be compensated to pay our bills
- Baseball, basketball, soccer, hockey
- Restaurants, bars, coffee shops, buffets, salad bars
- Recreation
- Concerts, movie theaters, live theater, country clubs, social gatherings
Many of these things don’t necessarily need to be idols.
But ask yourself what you live for, and what you don’t think you can live without. That will help you identify your own idols, and the things in which you place your trust and your hopes.
May I ask, was the God of the Universe on your list? Do you trust in something that cannot ultimately deliver and satisfy, or in someone who can? If you trust in God, a God who loves you enough to die for you, are you seeking to depend on him, to recognize his blessings and direction in your life?
Don’t store up treasures here on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal.
Perhaps it is time to add the destructive forces of pandemic and economic upheaval as forces that can destroy your treasures.
Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will be also.
